The ongon goes ahead of you. This one you can hold.

An ongon is the spirit that travels with a shaman — walking ahead on the road, watching what comes, standing between you and what should not reach you. This rattle carries one in the shape of a hand: a goat leather chamber formed like a finger, tipped with a carved wooden claw, pointing the way.

The handle is pine, taken as the branch grew — no two ever the same line. The piece in the photographs has found its keeper; yours will be made for you, and it will be its own.
